Dont renew Biman MDs job contract: JS body

Iswardi Airport ready for flight operation
UNB

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry yesterday suggested the government not to renew the job contract of Biman’s managing director Kyle Haywood because of his poor performance, reports UNB.
The committee came up with the suggestions at its 13th meeting, held at the Jatiya Sangsad with its chairman Lt Col Muhammad Faruk Khan (retd) in the chair.
Kyle Haywood, a South-African-born British citizen, joined Biman Bangladesh Airlines as managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) of Biman Bangladesh Airlines on January 5 this year.
Haywood, who was appointed on a one-year contract which has provision of extension of his service, is the second foreigner to become the MD and CEO of Biman after Kevin John Steele.
Talking to UNB about the recommendation, Faruk Khan said they made the suggestion as the performance of Biman’s present managing director during the last 10 months was not satisfactory.
“He (MD) is not performing well. He was on leave for over a month during the last 10 months. Now he wants further leave. This is why we suggested the government not to renew his service contract,” Khan said.
He said the parliamentary watchdog asked the ministry to take a quick decision over the appointment of Biman’s next MD and start the process.
The committee also asked the ministry to place its plans before the parliamentary body for the development of Chittagong Airport over the next 10 years.
The parliamentary body suggested improving the services of the national flag carrier by increasing its skilled manpower through direct recruitment and promotion.
The meeting was informed that the present government has a plan for upgrading Syedpur and Barisal airports as the regional ones.
A project proposal was sent to the ministry for conducting a feasibility study, formulating designs, preparing a master plan and making estimates by appointing a consultancy firm to develop the two airports.
It was also informed that Iswardi Airport is now ready for flight operation. If any airlines comes up with its proposal to operate flights to the airport, the Civil Aviation will take necessary steps responding to the proposal.
Committee members Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon, Md Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, Kamrul Asraf Khan, Md Aftab Uddin Sarker and Sabiha Nahar attended the meeting.
