Dhaka Theatre’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ will be staged today at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), Segun Bagicha in the city.
The theatre production, directed by noted theatre personality Nasiruddin Yousuff, is translated and adapted into Bangla by the talented aspiring theatre activist Rubayet Ahmed. This adaptation sees human concerns take centre-stage– Miranda and Ferdinand’s marriage is celebrated by a rousing song and dance, while the final tableau is not of Ariel being freed, nor of Prospero turning away from his magic, but of Caliban standing tall on a makeshift throne, clutching the conch shell Prospero has handed him, symbolising his kingship of the now-empty island.
The play is a distinctive blend of Manipur ‘Natapala’ and other traditional music, dance and narration forms.
