Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) is organising a musical evening by prominent Rabindra Sangeet singer of Bangladesh, Salma Akbar tomorrow at 6:30 pm at the IGCC’s Gulshan premises.
Born in Barisal, Salma Akbar studied at Chayyanaut and received her initial training in classical music from Ustad Narayan Chandra Basak and Ustad Azad Rahman. She trained in Rabindra Sangeet under legends such as Late Karim Sharafi, Sanjida Khatun, Sadi Mohammad, Rezwana Chowdhury Banna in Bangladesh and under Late Konika Bandopadyay, Nilima Sen, Sanghamitra Gupta in India.
Akbar has been a part of several visiting Bangladeshi cultural delegations to India in events such as the 125th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore in Kolkata in 1988; Victory Day celebrations of Bangladesh in Kolkata in 1990 and the first International Mother Language Day in the year 2000. In 1996, on the invitation of the Florida North American Bangladesh Association, Akbar presented Rabindra Sangeet in the USA.
Akbar is associated in various capacities with leading cultural organisations of Bangladesh such as the Bangladesh Rabindra Sangeet Sangastha, Gitanjali, Dept. of Rabindra Sangeet Bhavan and the Government Music University. She is also a regular artiste for the Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and other TV channels.
Salma Akbar and Sajed Akbar visited Kolkata, Shantiniketan and Guwahati from November 11 to 20, 2013 for musical concerts under ICCR sponsorship. Their musical concerts were deeply appreciated by music lovers of these three Indian cities.
The event will remain open to all.
