Gangsta: thrilling but incomplete end

Gangsta: thrilling but incomplete end

Noirit Mustapha

Somewhere in the modern world, there exists a seemingly simple, yet dark town known as Ergastalum. Here, almost all vices considered and experienced by humanity come to light, with little to no interference by the law. In fact, the law are even aligned with some of the major crime factions in the city to make sure an all-out civil war does not break out. In the middle of it all are two rogue lads, simply known as the Handymen, who help around the town and its many miscreant citizens with all kinds of dirty work. This is the seedy, violent, and all-round crazy world of Gangsta.
Our two main protagonists are Worick Archangelo, a rugged blonde with a bad eye, but amazing memory and shooting skills. His partner Nicolas Brown is deaf, grumpy, and a complete beast with a sword. Their general job description comes along the lines of “doing anything that pays and needs a special set of skills to complete”. Soon they’re joined by Alexandra Benedetto, a straggler from the streets whom the two save from a petty gang boss. As the story progresses with a deeper plot, it really is these characters and the rest of the colourful yet bleak cast of Gangsta that brings this show to life. The action is fun to look at, but after a while, viewers will start to like the backgrounds and stories these many personalities bring to the table. Especially noteworthy are Alex’s struggles with trauma thanks to her former boss, and the broken and twisted origin of Worick and Nic.
Unfortunately, the biggest flaw of Gangsta ends up being its ending. Without giving too much away, it introduces a new set of characters that completely raze Ergastalum as the protagonists know it. Added to that is the very rushed and incomplete feeling ending that leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. Gangsta is a fun ride at first, but given studio Manglobe’s recent bankruptcy, it might just be better to continue with the manga, instead of hoping for a second season.
