Three Rohingya youths and eight others were killed in alleged gunfights in six districts for their ‘involvement’ in drug dealing, robbery, and kidnapping over the last four days starting from Tuesday. In Cumilla, a suspected drug dealer was killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Ghilatoli along Shahpur bordering area in Adarsha sadar upazila early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Helal Uddin, son of sundar Ali of Bajgadda in the upazila. Tipped off, a team of BGB-10 conducted a drive in the area around 3am, said Lt Col Abu Mohammad Mahiuddin, commanding officer of BGB-10. Criminals opened fire when the border guards approached. At one stage, Helal was caught in the line of fire and sustained gunshot wounds.
Later, he was taken to local hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
BGB also recovered 3,000 Yaba pills from the possession of Helal.
In Cox's Bazar, three Rohingya youths were killed in an alleged gunfight with police in connection with the kidnap of a minor girl in Teknaf upazila on early yesterday.
Police identified them as Ukhiya Rohingya camp residents Shamsul Alam, 35, and Nur Alam, 21, and Leda Camp resident Habib, 20.
Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station,
said a three-year-old girl was abducted several days ago. The kidnappers had also demanded Tk 5 lakh as ransom.
Police launched drives to rescue the girl after her family approached for help. The kidnappers released the girl on June 2, the OC said.
The Rohingya men were arrested at 11:30pm on Thursday for their suspected involvement in the kidnapping, Pradip said.
After interrogation, police took the suspects with them to an area behind the Leda Camp in Teknaf around 1:45am to recover firearms.
A number of criminals, who were staying there, opened fire as soon as police reached the spot and triggered a skirmish, the OC said.
The men were killed in the ‘gunfight’, the police officer claimed, adding that they also recovered three light guns and eight cartridges.
In Thakurgaon, a suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with BGB members at Fakirganj in Pirganj upazila early Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Monirul Islam Babul, 35, son of Maidul Islam of North Sujalpur in Birganj upazila of Dinajpur district.
Lt Col Gazi Nahid Uz Zaman, commanding officer of BGB-42, said a team of BGB arrested Babul from the bordering area on Wednesday night along with 112 bottles of Phensidyl and one bottle of wine.
Later, the team along with Babul conducted a drive at Fakirganj around 2am to recover more drugs, he said.
Sensing presence of the border guards, Babul’s associates opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back that triggered a gunfight, Nahid said, adding that at one stage, Babul was caught in the line of fire and died while others managed to flee.
The BGB members also recovered 75 bottles of Phensidyl, one firearm, Tk 22,000 in cash and a sharp weapon from the spot, he said.
In Chattogram, two suspected robbers were killed in an alleged gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Sitakunda upazila early Tuesday.
The identities of the deceased could not be ascertained. RAB said its members had recovered firearms and bullets from the spot after the gunfight at Chhoto Kumira around 2am.
RAB-7 Assistant Director (Media) Masuqur Rahman said one of their teams went to the area to foil a robbery bid on the highway.
“The robbers opened fire as soon as our team reached the spot. After the skirmish, bodies of two robbers were recovered from the spot,” he claimed.
In Gazipur, a man, described as a drug dealer by police, was killed in a reported gunfight with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Monday night.
Ismail was a resident of Faridpur district.
Tongi East Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Kamal Hossain said that a smallarm, bullets and several thousand yaba pills were recovered from the spot after the gunfight.
“A RAB team was conducting an anti-narcotics raid in the river port area when drug dealers opened fire, triggering a skirmish,” OC Hossain said.
Ismail was killed during the gunfight, the police officer claimed.
His body was sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
On Tuesday, three people were killed in separate incidents of ‘gunfights’ with the RAB in Gazipur and Chattogram.
Ismail, identified as a drug dealer by police, was killed on Monday night in Gazipur.
“A RAB team was conducting an anti-narcotics raid in the river port area when drug dealers opened fire on it,” said Kamal Hossain, the officer-in-charge of Tongi East Police Station.
“Ismail was killed during the gunfight,” he said, adding that a smallarm, bullets and several thousand yaba pills were recovered from the spot.
In Chattogram, two suspected robbers were killed in Sitakunda upazila on early Tuesday.
