A late strike by Robiul Hassan brightened the Bangladesh chance to cross the first hurdle to move into the main qualifying round of the FIFA World Cup 2022 after defeating Laos by a solitary goal on Thursday at Vientiane Stadium, Laos.
The victory in the away match is a huge advantage for Bangladesh, as the away match was very much important for them before playing the home match, to be held on June 11 in Dhaka.
After winning the match, now Bangladesh need only a draw at home ground and that will enough for them to move into the next phase of the qualifying competition.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh team’s head coach Jamie Day and the captain Jamal Bhuiyan when put across their objectives in an official press conference before the match told media that they wanted to complete their 50 percent works at away ground to make the path easier for home ground to cross the first round.
However, on the day Bangladesh was under pressure almost full of the opening 45 minutes and could only fabricate some counter attacks.
Coach Jamie Day made two changes in the second half with replacing Towhidul Alam Sabuj and Robiul pulling out Arifur Rahman and Matin Meah when the Bangladesh appeared with different approach in the second half and bounced back strongly to take over the match control.
Sabuj just after being replaced had a golden opportunity to lead Bangladesh but the forward, who scored a couple of goals in the practice match in Thailand, failed shot the ball in an open net.
But the another substitute Robiul fired home the first chance came to his way, when he possessed the ball coming from midfield dodged past a marker just on the top of the box and marked the target with a an angular shot on 71st minute (1-0).
