Former Jamaat leader declared mayoral candidate

Election politics in Chapainawabganj has taken a new turn as former Jamaat leader and two-time mayor of Chapainawabganj municipality  Professor Ataur Rahman joined BNP on Manday and immediately earned the party’s nomination for mayoral candidate.
The joining function was held at the office of the Chapainawabganj municipality unit of BNP at Pathanpara in the town with the unit president Advocate Rafiqul Islam Tipu in the chair. Central organising secretary of BNP for Rajshahi division and former MP Harunur Rashid was present as chief guest.
Ataur Rahman, a freedom fighter and also a former leader of Jatya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), was expelled from Jamaat before the last municipality election.
Meanwhile, Jamaat declared Nazrul Islam, Ameer of Chapainawabganj district unit of Jamaat as their mayoral candidate, party sources said.
Besides, the aspirants from ruling Awami League are Clearing and Forwarding (C&F) agent Samiul Hoque Liton, General Secretary of Chapainawabganj municipality unit of AL Advocate Mizanur Rahman and General Secretary of Chapainawabganj district unit of Jubo League Shahidul Huda Alok. General Secretary of the Chapainawabganj district unit of Jatya Party Shahjahan Ali has started a mass contact as the party candidate and general secretary of the Chapainawabganj district unit of Jatya  Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) Moniruzzaman Monir has also been active as mayor contestant and he is likely to contest the polls under the banner of Nagorik Unnayan Committee.
