Construction work on the third unit of Barapukuria Coal-based thermal power plant has begun aiming to produce a 275 megawatt power.
This will add to 250 MW of electricity produced by two other units of the plant in June 2018, sources said. They said th coal fo the plant is coming from nearby Barapukuria coal mining project.
The annual coal requirement will be about 600,000 tonnes, Power Development Board (PDB) officials said at the site. They said the plant will use 75 per cent of total annual coal production of Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL) The third unit will cost Tk2,040 crores, said Md. Mahbubur Rahman, executive engineer of the plant.
Sarath Chandra Bhaduri, Chief Engineer of Barapukuria Power Plant, said the project implementation work began in August this year at the site next to two other units.
The 3rd unit to have both system like boiler and gas turbine to use both coal and gas as its fuel, he said.
Besides, the plant will use the water drained out by Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Ltd every day for extracting coal from underground.  The water will be used after treating in a treatment plant, which will be setup at the site.
BCMCL is producing nearly 1300 tonnes of water daily, which is drained out to nearby cannel. Beside, the existing 250MW units require nearly 1300 tonnes water to produce steam for generating power, which is now pumped out from underground through high powered deep tube wells.
Sarath Chandra Bhaduri said the new unit is scheduled to go into production in June 2018.
With the completion of the third unit the power generated from it will help meet the demand for electricity in north –west zone of the country and ease low voltage problem there.
