The Mohashtami, one of the main rituals of the five-day Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindus, has been held on Wednesday.
The main attraction of the day, Kumari Puja, worshipping of the virgin goddess, was held in Dinajpur Ramkrishna Mission Puja Mandap in the morning.
Hundreds of Hindu devotees offered Anjali (prayers) before the virgin goddess seeking her blessings for peace, prosperity, welfare, fraternity and changing of their lot. Iqbalur Rahim, Whip of Jatiya Sangsad was present at the mandap during the puja.
Nirupama Benarjee, a seven years old daughter of Narayan Benarjee of Bara Gurgola area of Dinajpur Municipality adorned as Durga at the Ramakrishna Mission Puja mandap.
Swami Omoyatna Nanda Maharaj chief of Dinajpur Ramkrishna Mission said ‘We worship the Goddess Durga as the mother of the universe who remains in every individual woman as a mother.’
Kumari Puja is being held to imbibe everybody with that feeling as the Devi Durga is the symbol of motherly feeling and an adolescent girl as well, the Maharaj added.
The festival will come to an end with the emersion of the images of the Goddess Durga in the nearby rivers and water bodies on October 23.
It is to be mentioned that a total of 1,182 mandaps have been erected in Dinajpur district this year to celebrate the holy Durga Puja, Kumari, or Kumari Devi, is the tradition of worshiping young pre-pubescent girls as manifestations of the divine female energy or devi in Hindu religious traditions.
The word Kumari, derived from Sanskrit Kaumarya meaning "virgin", means young unmarried girls in Nepali and some Indian languages and is a name of the goddess Durga as a child.
In India a Kumari is generally chosen for one day and worshipped accordingly on certain festivals like Navaratri or Durga Puja. In the Indian state of Bengal this is a particularly prevalent practice.
In Habiganj: Kumari Puja was celebrated in a befitting manner and with enthusiasm at Ramkrishna Mission in Habiganj yesterday.
The Kumari Puja was conducted by Hemendra Bhattacharja in Ramkrishna Mission of Habiganj. The girl selected for the puja was 8 years old Pushpita Chakrabarthi, student of class 4 and daughter of Ramkrishna Chakrabarthi, of Ganga Nagar village in Bahubal upazila of Habiganj.
MP Advocate Md Abu Zahir, Police Super of Habiganj Jaidev Kumar Bhadra and Habiganj Municipality Mayor Piyara Begum addressed on the occasion.
The police administration took tight security measures for the occasion. Abu Zahir MP also visited the close-circuit camera-centre that was setup by the police for the security of devotees.
