5 factories fined Tk 27 lakh
The Department of Environment (DoE) has fined five washing factories in the capital’s Rupnagar area a total of Tk 27 lakh on charge of polluting rivers and water bodies.
As part of its anti-pollution drive, the DoE summoned the authorities of the five factories to its Dhaka headquarters on Wednesday, said a DoE handout.
After hearings, DoE director (Monitoring and Enforcement) AKM Mizanur Rahman penalised the authorities for not taking environment clearance and harming the environment and ecology by releasing untreated wastes into water bodies by not setting up effluent treatment plants (ETPs). Of the factories, New Colour Design was fined Tk 11, while Exim Apparel Washing Tk seven lakh, Jamuna Washing Plant Tk four lakh, Wind Wash Tk three lakh and KM Washing Plant Tk two lakh.

View-exchange meeting held

A views-exchange meeting on ‘Right to Information Act’ was held at Deputy Commissioner’s hall room in Narayanganj city yesterday.
Deputy Commissioner Anisur Rahman Mia was the chief guest while Gausul Azam, additional deputy commissioner (General), presided over the meeting between the journalists and district administration. District Information officer Md Kamruzzaman, Assistant Information Officer Tania Ahmed, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Afroza Akter Chowdhury, Deputy Director of local government and executive magistrate Israt Hossain, were present, among others.
    Journalists Nafiz Ashraf, Masumuzzaman, Sharif Uddin Shobuj, Abdus Salam, Mahfuzur Rahman were present and exchanged their opinion on Right to Information act.  Meanwhile, this law was enacted in 2009.

Chhatra Unit  in the offing

The Bangabandhu Education and Research Council is going to float ‘Chhatra Unit’ in all colleges and universities of the country, said a press release on Tuesday.
The organisation will form a unit in each college and university with cultural minded, meritorious and secular students in the committee, the press release added.
Meanwhile, Dr Bahauddin Golap, organising
secretary of the organisation, has been appointed as the coordinator of the ‘unit’.
