1 held with govt medicines

Detectives arrested a young man along with medicines meant for government hospitals from the Bypass intersection in the city on Monday. The arrestee is Maksudul Haque, 35, son of Sanaullah. Golam Ruhul Kuddus, spokesman of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said a team of Detective Branch of police arrested Maksudul along with a carton while he was getting on a Chapainawabganj-bound bus around 12:45pm. Police recovered eight types of not-for-sale antibiotic worth Tk 1.10 lakh from the carton, said the police official. During interrogation, Maksudul said a man, hailing from Kushtia, gave him the medicines for selling those to a person in Chapainawabganj. However, he did not give any clear information to police, Kuddus said.
Female ‘mugger’ held

Police arrested a young woman while fleeing reportedly after taking away a gold chain from an auto-rickshaw passenger in city’s Jhautala area on Monday afternoon. The arrestee is as Swarna Sarker, 23, wife of Sudon Sarker from Mohanpur village of Brahmanbaria’s Kasba upazila. Victim’s husband Fazlur Rahman said Swarna was his fellow traveller when he along with his wife was going to Kandirpar by the auto-rickshaw. When the vehicle reached YWC School in Jhautola, Swarna took away the gold chain and tried to flee, said Abdus Salam Mia, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station. Later, on-duty policemen caught her.
5 ‘yaba peddlers’ arrested

At least five ‘yaba peddlers’ were arrested by Rapid Action Battalion team of Gazipur Purabari camp with 1500 pieces of yaba tablet in two separates drive at Nagar Hawla area and Bilashpur area of the city on Monday and Tuesday. The arrested were identified as Azgar Ali, 40 of Nagarhawla area, Delwar Hossain, 35 of same area, Mohammed Saddam Hossain, 26 in Sherpur, Monir Hossain, 35 of Gazipur town and Sagor Hossain, 25 of the city. Camp commander of RAB 1 Gazipur purabari camp Lieutenant commander Abdullah Al Mamun said, on secret information, separate two teams of RAB -1 conducted two raids at the areas Monday night and Tuesday morning and arrested them while they were selling yaba tablets. They also seized 1500 pieces of yaba tablet.
Case filed over minor’s death

After more than a month’s silence, a case was filed on Sunday over the killing of a child who was scalded to death in Daulatpur upazila. Victim’s father Abdul Khalek filed the case with Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court against 13 people on Sunday morning. Judge Shahidul Islam ordered Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to look into the matter. According to the case statement, Rupsha upazila resident Khalek lived with his wife and child Lima Khatun Ittifa, 10, in Chattogram. His step daughter Ripa and her husband Shahid brought Ittifa to Daulatpur on November 20 last year. They kept the girl at their uncle Abdul Gani’s house. On March 28, Rumpa poured boiling water on the child. As Ittifa’s condition gradually deteriorated, she was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital on March 30 using fake name and address. The girl died on April 5. The next day, Gani picked up Khalek and made him sign a blank paper. He also threatened to kill him and hand him over to police with yaba, if he lodged any complaint over his daughter’s death.
