A court sent Saraipara Ward Councillor Saber Ahmed to jail yesterday over the killing of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Mahiuddin Sohel. Saber's lawyer Sheikh M Iftekhar Shimul said his client had been taken into police custody. The Awami League leader secured a month's interim bail from the High Court. He was told to get bail from the subordinate court within this period. Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Akbar Hossain Mridha rejected his bail plea after a hearing in the case. BCL leader Sohel was lynched by a mob at Pahartali Railway Market for alleged extortion on January 7. Sohel's family claimed that it was a premeditated murder. His younger brother Shakirul Islam Shishir filed a case at Double Mooring Police Station naming 27 people.
