One to die, four get life for killing youth in Mymensingh

A court in Mymensingh yesterday sentenced a man to death and four others to life term imprisonment in a youth murder case in Mymensingh in 2010.
The death convict was identified as Habib Mia, 34, son of Kamal Mia of Mymensingh city’s Akua Madrasa Market area.
Other convicts are-Swapna Begum, 50, of city’s RK Mission Road, Jibon, 29, Sabbir, alias Md Sabbir, 31, and Sharif alias Shiru, 39, of city’s Akua area.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each, in default to suffer one year more in jail.
Mohammad Nurul Amin Biplob, Additional Session Judge of Second Court in Mymensingh delivered the verdict, said Sheikh Kabirul Islam, court inspector of Mymensingh.Of the convicts, Habib and Jibon were tried in absentia.
According to sources, Md Parvez alias Rubel, 25, was hacked to death over a trifling matter at Mymensingh city’s Chhatrishbari Colony area on February 10 in 2010.
The victim’s mother Selina Akter lodged a case with Kotwali Police Station accusing six people on the same day.
Police pressed a charge sheet against them on June 22 in the same year. Sarwar alias Md Sarwar, another accused in the case died during the trial.
After examining witnesses and evidences, the court handed down the verdict.
62 sacks of VGF rice seized
UNB, Sirajganj
Sixty-two sacks of rice meant for distribution among poor people under the Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme were seized in Tarash upazila on Monday.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Iffat Jahan said 69 sacks of VGF rice were allocated for the poor and helpless people of ward-2 of Tarash municipality on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
However, councillor Bakul Hossain distributed only seven sacks of rice among them and sold the remaining 62 sacks in the black market.
Receiving the information, the UNO conducted a drive and recovered the VGF rice, he said, adding that the seized rice was kept at the government silo.
Woman crushed under train
Our correspondent, Chandpur
A woman was crushed to death by a train near Hajiganj Railway Station on Chandpur-Laksam railway in Hajiganj upazila of the district on Monday night.
The identity of the deceased, aged around 45, could not be known immediately, police sources said.
Inter-city train ‘Meghna Express’ of Chandpur bound train coming from Chattogram hit the woman in the area around 9:30pm, said Hajiganj Railway Station Master Rupon Chandra Shil, killing her on the spot.
On information, police recovered the body and sent to hospital morgue.
