Journalists’ body urges govt to release Khaleda

As many as 1,017 senior journalists in a joint statement yesterday urged the government to release the BNP’s ailing chairperson, Khaleda Zia, before Eid-ul-Fitr on humanitarian grounds.

“We are concerned over Khaleda Zia’s health condition…We urge the government to immediately release her from jail,” they said in a statement.

Referring to physicians’ report, the statement also said the former premier was feeling excruciating pain on her hands and shoulder and her diabetes had taken serious turn. She was unable to take her usual food, the statement added.

The statement sent by Quader Ghani Chowdhury, president of the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), recalled the contribution of Khaleda in protecting country’s independence, sovereignty, development, multiparty democracy, and women empowerment and human rights.

It will be inhuman, illogical, revengeful and unacceptable to push her towards death by keeping her in jail, the statement observed. “We expect the government would show respect to democracy and listen to people’s demand by releasing Khaleda immediately,” the statement added.

Khaleda has been serving a 17-year term in two graft cases since February 8 last year and is currently undergoing treatment at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital.
