Arrest of killers demanded

Family members of murdered Juba League leader Rezaul Karim Russel yesterday demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the killers.

“We want nothing but the capital punishment of the killers but it is a matter of great regret that the prime suspects are still at large”, the victim’s father Jalal said at a press conference held at Mymensingh Press Club yesterday.  

A group of assailants stabbed Russel, 34, to death near Mrittunjoy School in the city  on May 14. A member of the district unit of Juba League Russel was also a former vice president of district BCL.

Victim’s father Jalal of village Char Horipur in Mymensingh sadar upazila filed a murder case against some 14 people with Kotwali Police Station later that day. Abdullah Al Mamun Arif, former president of BCL’s Mymensingh city unit was named as the prime accused in the case.  Other accused are: Rana and Devit Rony from the city and Badal from Char Gobindapur village in Sadar upazila.

“Prime suspects have not been arrested yet and we are being threatened by unknown people to withdraw the case or face Russel’s consequences”, alleged the victim’s elder sister Jesmin Ara Poly.

“Russel was involved with AL politics but no quarter of the party came forward so far to support us when we are passing most critical time of our life”, Poly said in tears. Poly read out the written statement at the press conference.  Vice President of Mymensingh Press Club Md Nowab Ali, Russel’s uncles-Habibur Rahman Hobi, Mofazzol Hossain and Ashraf Ali; and Russel’s younger brother Anwar Hossain Limon were present, among others.
