Prime accused held in Kishoreganj

Police arrested yesterday Towhid Mia, 22, the prime accused in the attack of a schoolgirl in Kishoreganj sadar upazila on Sunday, from Kumri village in Pakundia upazila yesterday. The girl, seriously injured in the attack, is now fighting for life at the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Acting on a tip-off, a team of police, led by Matiur Rahman, sub-inspector of Ahutia police, arrested Towhid yesterday at about 5:30am from his relative’s house at Kumri village in Pakundia tracking his mobile phone.
Smriti Akhtar, 15, is a student of class-X at  Nandala Osomuddin High School in  Kisohreganj sadar upazila, came under attack on Sunday morning while she was going to the school to appear the SSC test examinations.
Towhid Mia, of Pon Kolima village, had been harassing Smriti, daughter of late Helal Uddin of the same village, for a long time. As he was refused by the girl repeatedly, Towhid, a garment worker in Gazipur, and his accomplices waylaid the girl on her way to school. At one stage, Towhid started stabbing the girl on her neck and left hand with a knife, leaving her injured seriously, police said.
Hearing Smriti’s scream, locals rushed to the spot and took the girl to Kishoreganj 250-bed General Hospital. Later, doctors referred her to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital as her condition deteriorated.
Abdul Qaium, maternal uncle of Smriti, filed a case with Kishoreganj model police station in this connection on Sunday night implicating Towhid Mia and four others.  Protesting the incident the students, teachers and local people blocked highway and formed separate human chains on Monday.
Mir Mosaraf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kishoreganj model police station, said the other accused persons will also be arrested as soon as possible.
