World Statistics Day-2015 was celebrated yesterday across the country as elsewhere in the world with a call to formulate social and economic plans for a sustainable development of the nation with the theme ‘Better Data; Better Lives’. In Rajbari, the district statistical office and district administration jointly arranged a meeting with Deputy Commissioner of Rajbari Rafiqul Islam Khan in the chair to mark the day. The meeting was addressed, among others, by Police Superintendent Zehadul Kabir, Additional Deputy Commissioner Syeda Nowsheen Pranini and Sadar Upazila Statistics Officer Abdul Momin Khan. Earlier, a colorful rally was brought out that paraded the main streets of the town. Addressing the occasion, the speakers stressed the need for strengthening the country’s data base considering its significance in formulating social and economic plans. District level officials, civil society members, students, teachers, local journalists took part at the programme. In Gaibandha: Marking the day, district office of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics chalked out a programme in cooperation with the district administration. In the morning, a discussion on the importance of the day was held in the auditorium of Public Library and Club of the town. Deputy Commissioner M Abdus Samad addressed the meeting as the chief guest and acting Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman Rashida Begum and UNO Ashraful Momin Khan were present as the special guests. DC M Abdus Samad, in his speech, said the use of statistics will be increased in different sectors for expediting the country’s social and economic development. Earlier, a colorful rally led by DC M Abdus Samad was brought out from Independence Square at 9 am and ended at the Poura Park after parading the main roads of the town. A large number of people, including district and upazila level officials, upazila statistical officers, teachers, students, social workers and journalists of the print and electronic media took part in the programme.
