DU, British Council sign MoU
Dhaka University (DU) and British Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce 'Citizenship Education and Community Engagement Programme' at the university. DU Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique and Chief Operating Officer of the British Council Adrian Greer signed the MoU on behalf of their respective institution at the VC's office yesterday, said a press release. Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) of DU Nasreen Ahmad, Treasurer Md Kamal Uddin, Dean of the Faculty of Arts Md Akhtaruzzaman, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Farid Uddin Ahmed, Regional Director (South Asia) of British Council Stephan Roman, Country Director, Bangladesh Barbara Wickham and Deputy Director Matt Pusey were present, among others, on this occasion. Under this MoU, Dhaka University and British Council will work together to develop leadership skills among university students.
The British Council will organise training of facilitators (TOFs) and provide all necessary technical and financial support for it. The University of Dhaka will identify and recommend faculty members in this regard. The trained faculty members will act as facilitators and teach the Citizenship Course at the under graduate level. They will also train the students as per the modules and action plan. The two institutions will further offer the same course as part of the academic curriculum of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Arts of DU in the following semesters. Arefin Siddique thanked the British Council authorities for signing the MoU on such an effective programme and hoped that the students of the university as well as all of citizen in the country would be highly benefited from this initiative.

IU goes on Puja vacation today
Islamic University (IU) will go on a five-day vacation on the occasion Durga Puja and Ashura from today, the university official sources said. The administrative and academic activities will remain closed from October 21 and October 26. IU Registrar Dr Abdul Latif told that the administrative and academic activities will resume from October 26.

Workshop on quality assurance held at DU

A daylong workshop on ‘Quality Assurance in the University of Dhaka’ was held at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the university on Monday. The Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Dhaka University (DU) organised the workshop where DU Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique spoke as the chief guest. Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) of DU Nasreen Ahmad, head of Quality Assurance Unit of UGC Mesbahuddin Ahmed and member of UGC Yousuf Ali Mollah addressed the inaugural session as special guests. Director of IQAC Sheikh Shamimul Alam delivered welcome speech while additional director Dr Mahbub Ahsan Khan gave vote ofthanks. Prof Arefin Siddique stressed the need for ensuring quality of the tertiary education in Bangladesh to face global challenges of the 21st century. He urged the faculty members to work sincerely for improving their quality through self-criticism. He emphasized on introducing institutional frame work at the universities to detect weakness of the faculty members. About 120 teachers from different departments of Dhaka University participated in the workshop.

Seminar on legal challenges for journalists

The Department of Media and Mass Communication of American international University – Bangladesh (AIUB) organised a seminar on ‘Contemporary Ethical and Legal Challenges for Journalists’ at the AIUB auditorium in the capital recently, says a press release. The keynote speaker in the seminar was Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, Editor-in- Chief of ATN Bangla and President, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ). AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, chairperson of the Department of TV and Film Studies, Dhaka University (DU) and Adviser department of Media and Mass Communication, AIUB delivered the welcome speech with his inspiring and motivational words.
Bulbul shared his experiences as an eminent journalist, CEO, consultant and trainer in large local media conglomerates at home and abroad for more than 30 years.

French Deputy Head of Mission meets DU VC

Deputy Head of Mission of French Embassy in Bangladesh Jean-Pierre Poncet called on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique at the latter's office of the university on Monday. He was accompanied by Director of Alliance Francaise Bruno Plasse. During the meeting, they discussed matters of mutual interest, especially regarding the progress of newly opened under graduate course on France Language at Dhaka University in cooperation with France Government and France Embassy, a DU press release said. The DU VC sought further help and cooperation of some native teachers from France to run this course smoothly at the university. The possibilities of undertaking joint collaborative academic and research programmes by Dhaka University and higher educational institutions in France also came up for discussion. Prof Arefin thanked the guests for their visit to Dhaka University and keen interest in undertaking joint collaborative academic and research activities with DU.

UGC Officers' Assoc installation ceremony held
The installation ceremony of the newly-elected executive committee of University Grants Commission (UGC) Officer's Association was held in the UGC auditorium in the capital on Monday.  UGC Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan attended the function as the chief guest and administered the oath to the members of executive committee of the association, a UGC press release said. UGC members Mohammad Mohabbat Khan, Abul Hashem, Md Akhtar Hossain, Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah and Dil Afroza Begum spoke on the occasion as special guests, while its secretary Dr Md Khaled presided over the function. Md Kamal Hossain and Md Mohibul Ahsan have been elected President and General Secretary respectively in the 7th general election to the 11-member Executive Committee of UGC Officers' Association for two years.
The other office-bearers are Md Omar Faruque and Engineer Mohammad Monir Ullah (vice-presidents), Mohammad Yousuf Ali Khan (joint-secretary), Mohammad Harun Miah (sports and cultural affairs secretary), Md Golam Dastagir (organising and publicity secretary), Khandakar Mahtab Hossainn (treasurer), Md Atwar Rahman, Mohammad Nur Islam Chowdhury and AKM Mahmudur Rahman Miah (members).
