Rajshahi achieves self-sufficiency

Rajshahi district has earned self-sufficiency in fish production in the last couple of years. After meeting the local demand, more than 100 truckloads of fish in water containers are being supplied to Dhaka and other districts of the country from Rajshahi daily. The success in achieving self-sufficiency in fish production became possible due to pisciculture friendly activities of the government and technical support as per need of the farmers and entrepreneurs, informed an official of the Department of Fisheries of Rajshahi.
According to a statistics of Rajshahi district fisheries office, in 2013-14 fiscal year, 35.48 lakh tonnes of fish was produced in the country whereas in the 2008-09 fiscal the total fish production in the country was 27.01 lakh tonnes. However; in 2014-15 fiscal, target has been fixed to produce 37.03 lakh metric tons of fish in the country.
Golam Rabbani, fisheries officer of Rajshahi district, informed as against the need of 51,151 tonnes of fish, a total of 66,882 tonnes of fish were produced and caught in Rajshahi district from various open and closed water bodies in 2014.  In 2015, a target has been fixed to produce and collect 70,084 tonnes of fish from the same sources. He hoped, due to intense observation and activities by the local fishermen, common people and officials of department of fisheries, the target of this year will be fulfilled.  Meraj Uddin, an aged fisherman of Char Khanpur village under Paba upazila, informed he and his son used to fish in the river Padma for about 20 years.  He said the fish production in the river had been increasing for the last four to five years due strict vigilance from the authorities of the department of fisheries and law enforcers to control catching of fish fry and fish eggs. Release of fish fries of different varieties in the river by the local fisheries department has also increased fish production, he added.
