A woman and her daughter was burned to death while her husband and another daughter received serious burn injuries after a group of unidentified men torched their house in Farashpur village under Kaliganj upazila in Jhenidah early yesterday allegedly over dowry.
The deceased were identified as Taslima Khatun, 38, and her daughter Tasmia Khatun, 02. Her husband Sirazul Islam alias Chand Ali, 55, and his another daughter Urmi Khatun, 25, sustained serious burn injuries. Chand Ali was taken to Jessore General Hospital in a critical state as 55 per cent of his body got burned.
Family members alleged that Kamal Hossain, wife of injured Urmi, carried out the arson attack for not meeting his demand for dowry. Kaliganj Police OC Anwar Hoassain said some unidentified persons sprayed some type of petroleum on the house of Chand Ali and then torched the house at about 3.00AM on Tuesday. The injured were first taken to Jessore General Hospital. Taslima Khatun and her daughter Tasmia died while being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at about 8.00AM.
Urmi Khatun complained to police that since her marriage, her husband Kamal Hossain had been torturing her to bring money from her parents. Urmi got married to Kamal, son of Babul Hossain of Lebutala village in Jessore three years ago. Kamal on Sunday demanded a large sum of money and warned of serious consequences if the money was not paid, she told police. Urmi claimed that her husband led the arson attack as they failed to give him money.
Police said the bodies would be sent to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. Sony, brother of Urmi, filed a case yesterday with the Kaliganj Police accusing Urmi’s husband Kamal and two others. The main accused in the case, Kamal, could not be arrested till filling of this report yesterday evening, said police.
