Both Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) yesterday continued their ongoing awareness campaign against dengue outbreak.
As part of the campaign, both the city corporations held rallies to make the citizens aware against mosquito menace that triggers dengue fever outbreak in October-November every year.
Dengue fever is transmitted by the bite of an Aedes mosquito infected with a dengue virus. Sometimes, symptoms are mild and can be mistaken for those of the flu or another viral infection. Younger children and people who have never had the infection before tend to have milder cases than older children and adults.
However, serious problems can develop. These include dengue hemorrhagic fever, a rare complication characterised by high fever, damage to lymph and blood vessels, bleeding from the nose and gums, enlargement of the liver, and failure of the circulatory system.
The symptoms may progress to massive bleeding, shock and death. This is called dengue shock syndrome (DSS).
To prevent the spread of dengue fever, you must first prevent the breeding of its vector, the Aedes mosquito.
The Aedes mosquito is easily identifiable by the distinctive black and white strips on its body. It prefers to breed in clean and stagnant water easily found in homes.
