Title aspirants Dhaka Abahani Limited got off to a perky start in the Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup football tournament with a 3-2 win over Karachi Electric of Pakistan in the opening match at the MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong yesterday.
Waly Faisal put Dhaka Abahani into lead with a brilliant free kick when Sunday Chizoba added one and an own goal enabled them to win by an odd goal in five.
Quddus and Yunis Sunday scored one goal each for Karachi Electric FC reduced the margin for the Pakistani team.
Abahani Limited began the match with attacking attitude right from the kick off but in the initial stage looked a bit disorganised and took time to get the tempo. For most of the time they were too much hasten to release the ball into wrong place.
But they could produce early chances to take lead while Sunday and Kester squandered easy opportunities which came to their ways.
Abahani created the first real goal opportunity on 20th minute but Kester Akon spoiled the chance as the Nigerian could not keep his cool to sweep home when Sunday Chizuba provided him a pass inside the area. Akon being left free inside the penalty area powered his right footer straight to the Karachi Electric’s keeper, who was sharp to fist away it for
a corner.
However, the Dhaka giants opened the scoring on 24th minute when Waly Faisal fired home a spectacular angular free-kick giving no chance to Karachi Electric keeper Golam Nabi (1-0).
After taking the lead Abahani looked more aggressive and also very organised with playing passing football and doubled the advantage on 31st minute. This time it was a very smart finishing from Sunday when he kept his cool to head a long ball off Emon Babu from the central line over the advancing Electric FC goalkeeper (2-0).
Abahani could have taken a 3-0 lead before the break but Sunday Chizoba again failed to mark the target when he powered a Shahed cut back over the cross piece from the danger area.
Pakistan, who saw trailing 0-2 during the first half, became very offensive and tried to force Abahani to share ball possession equally and also came closer twice to score a goal when a Rasul shot narrowly missed the side post on 46th minute. Then taking the advantage of Abahani defenders’ lapses, an effort from Reaz in the open net went over the bar.
But the Pakistani team kept their stride and reduced the margin on 75th minute with Quddus powered a right footer from outside the box (1-2).
Abahani, who had a clear domination throughout the game, extended their lead from an own goal. Karachi Electric defender Omar Faruq while trying to save a Waly Faisal free kick shot the ball in his own post (1-3).
Abahani were very closer to enlarge the margin on 88th minute but Fahad looked very much shaky to shot the ball into net as he just shot the
ball straight to goalkeeper from almost a handsha-king distance.
Pakistan reduced another one on 89th minute and this time Yunis Sunday converted a penalty when a ball from right side corner was handled by an Abahani defender inside the area (2-3).
