Industries Minister Nurul Mazid Mahmud Humayun yesterday said no institution or official of the government could be “managed” anymore by a dishonest industrialist or traders with low quality goods. “The Sheikh Hasina government has taken a zero tolerance against corruption. Producing and marketing substandard products are forms of corruption. If anyone does so and think he could somehow manage the official, then he is wrong,” Humayun said.

“We will make sure he will face the consequences for this,” he said while asking the business people to be more attentive in maintaining the quality of products shunning the mentality of making excessive profits.

“Business people need to come out from the mentality of making excessive profits and become conscious about the quality of their products. The country as well as the society and image of the business people are affected due to a handful of profit-hungry people,” Humayun said a seminar marking Metrology Day yesterday.

The theme of this year’s metrology day is ‘The International System of Units-Fundamentally Better’.

Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institute (BSTI) organised the seminar with its director general Moazzem Hossain in the chair. State Minister for the Industries Ministry Kamal Ahmed Majumder and secretary of the industries ministry Abdul Halim, spoke at the seminar held at BSTI's head-office.

Minister Humayun said the government has taken steps to set up 100 Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in different parts of the country for foreign entrepreneurs who have been planning to come to Bangladesh for investment.

If local business people do not improve the quality of their products they would not be able to cope with the competition that is expected to be created after foreign investment, he added.

He urged BSTI to carry out their responsibility properly. Business people should follow the standards set by BSTI, the minister said adding the government does not want to force the business people to follow law.

State Minister Kamal Ahmed Majumder said, the government wants the business people to become conscious regarding maintaining the standards of their products.

Kamal said BSTI has already achieved accreditation certificate from some internationally reputed accreditation agencies. As a result, BSTI's testing certificates about Bangladesh products are getting recognition internally, he added.

Secretary Halim said some laboratories, product certification system and management system certification of BSTI have achieved international recognition.

BSS adds from Rajshahi:

Ensuring proper measurement of food ingredients is vital for maintaining food safety as millions of people suffer from illness by eating contaminated and adulterated foods every year.

Hazardous food has been adjudged as a major threat to public health in the present context, so emphasis should be given on adopting effective measures in this regard.

These views were expressed at a discussion by educationists and experts who urged all concerned to discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty in this regard.

Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institutions (BSTI) at their regional office arranged a seminar at a city restaurant to observe the World Metrology Day-2019 yesterday. “International System of Unit- Fundamentally Better” was the main theme of the day.

The main objective of World Metrology Day is to raise public awareness about the importance of measurements in their daily life. Dr Ariful Islam Nahid, Chairman of Department of Applied Physics and Electronics Engineering of Rajshahi University and Syed Mustaque Hassan spoke on the occasion as chief and special guest.
