Master plan taken to control pollution of rivers: Minister

“Illegal structures will be removed immediately as ministry provided us with fund”

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said yesterday 10-year master plan has been taken to free five rivers -- Kharnaphuli, Balu, Turag, Shitalakhya and Buriganga from pollution.  

“After getting the nod from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, we will execute the plan. It would take 10-year to keep the rivers free from pollution and land grabbers,” said Mahmud while replying to a question from reporters in Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) conference room yesterday.

He said illegal encroachment on the rivers are going on unabated. “Many permanent structures were established on the rivers. Those illegal structures will be removed immediately as the land ministry provided us with necessary fund to run the drive,” added Mahmud.

He also said that the government has given top priority to Chattogram port and gradually all the development initiatives will be implemented.

Mentioning about Bay Terminal construction project he said “To enhance the port's capacity to cope with spiralling foreign trade these projects have been taken up and all of us should come forward to implement this project,” he added.

Whip of Parliament Shamsul Haque Chowdhury, CPA Chairman Rear Admiral Zulfiqur Aziz were present among others at the meeting.
