Bashundhara look happily placed in league title race

Newcomers Bashundhara Kings placed them happily after their sensational double over reigning champions Abahani Limited. The babes consolidated their position with a solitary goal win against Abahani on Sunday.

 Bashundhara after edging past Abahani crossed a major hurdle and looked set to win their maiden league title on their debut. They were now leading by seven points from their nearest rivals Abahani and Russel KC with 43 points from 15 matches. Barring a draw with underdogs Team BJMC, they won remaining 14 games.

Abahani, the six times champions out of 10 previous editions, including a hat-trick champions of the Bangladesh Professional League were the strongest challengers for Bashundhara in their process but the former looked to be demoralised after Sunday’s defeat. Now they will have to depend on the results of reaming ten matches to be played by Bashundhara.

In terms of competitiveness apart from Abahani Limited - Sheikh Russel, Sheikh Jamal, Saif Sporting Club and the giant killers Arambagh KS would appear as an obstacle at least to make an upset with snatching points but all suffered defeats to the newcomers.

Bashundhara on their mission defeated all the challengers in the first leg with Abahani by 3-0, Sheikh Russel by 1-0, Arambagh 3-2, Sheikh Jamal 1-0 and Saif Sporting by 3-2, when in their two matches in the second leg, besides solitary goal win against Abahani they also beat Sheikh Jamal by 3-1.
