The performance Bangladesh showcased in the triangular series in Ireland as of now if they can replicate it in Cricket World Cup (CWC) in United Kingdom (UK), it would obviously be brought better result for them, said Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu.
The BCB chief selector also said that the series in Ireland before the ICC Cricket World Cup was needed for them, from where the management will take a clear picture of the balance and combination of the team to pick the right players and set the right combination against the opposition in the showpiece event.
“It’s always good when a team has a good balance. It helps to perform the team and the players as well. We call it the team effort,” said Minhajul Abedin Nannu, who went to Ireland with the Bangladesh team as manager.
“And the team effort comes from the team spirit. When there are performers in playing XI and out of the XI, it’s a good sign for a team. It’s possible to use what it needed for the team’s performance and its success. It’s a relief for a team that there are performers in the bench,” Nannu told The Independent at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.
“It’s a big achievement I think when Soumya, Mosaddek and Liton came in-form back from their patchy form. It’s a plus point for the team when there is a stability of the performance among the players. There is a competition for players’ selection. So, every moment we have to stay alert,” he added.
Nannu is satisfied with the overall bowling performance the bowlers have had for them but the selector thought that they could have done better further considering the Irish flat track.
“As per the condition in Ireland, bowlers should have done better bowling performance more than they have done. Therefore, I think, we’ve a balance in our bowling because they can cope up with any condition. In that sense, our bowlers really bowled well in the triangular series. It’s a big matter to keep the run-rate under six and bowlers became successful to do it because the wickets were flat,” he viewed.
“On such flat track, it is difficult if you don’t make batting run-rate over six to below seven. You have seen it. In that sense, our bowlers understand the matter properly. Playing the tri-nation series in Ireland prior to the ICC Cricket World Cup has been a plus point for us,” he maintained.
“The players already understood how to play batting, bowling and fielding on such cool condition. I believe if we could bring these experiences and continue it in the World Cup; we hope a good performance will be happened in the flagship event,” he added.
Nannu was a part of Bangladesh first ODI win (against Kenya), also first World Cup match win (against Scotland) and tri-series win (against West Indies). When asked him to make a comparison between 1999 World Cup and the current World Cup, the former captain said that there is a gulf difference between the two World Cups.
“First World Cup for us was a dream. We had no good infrastructure while we were going to play in the World Cup. We’ve to play cricket, football, hockey and other sporting events in a single field, where there were no practice facilities. From that position, we’ve championed in ICC Trophy (1997) and won two matches in World Cup (1999). It’s a big milestone. It’s not comparable to the other World Cup and the team along with the players as well. We had no infrastructure in cricket,” he said.
