The Port City is ready to stage the Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup football tournament to kick off from today at M A Aziz Stadium. Dhaka Abahani Limited will take on Electric FC of Pakistan in the opening match at 4.30 pm. Hosts Chittagong Abahani will face Kolkata giants Kingfisher East Bengal in the second match of the day at 7.30 pm.
In the eight clubs’ tournament, all the teams are from the South Asian region while two teams from India, one each from Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan and rest three from Bangladesh. Dhaka Mohammedan and Kolkata Mohammedan are other two strong contenders in the tournament.
However, all the teams’ coaches and captains expressed their confidence to win the title at a pre-tourney press conference yesterday.
Shafiqul Islam Manik, coach of Chittagong Abahani, set his initial target to be one off top two in the league phase, as he explained his had no adequate preparation for the tournament.
“Actually, what I believe that the success of the team depends on, enough preparation, technique of play and certainly you would be the lucky enough to reach the ultimate goal.”
“Despite, our preparation is not good enough, I am very much positive to finish the group phase among top twos, though I know the job will not be trouble-free,” said Manik.
“I believe, we are capable to fight against the teams of this region, I am optimistic to accomplish the initial target, in fact we want to give good result with displaying a good football.”
The experienced coach and the former national colour Manik said that boys have every ability to overcome any pressure as they are experienced to play in the top level.
Biswajit Bhattachariya, coach of the Kingfisher East Bengal Club of Kolkata was not clear about his target but they will try to fulfill the expectation of the fans.
“Wherever we play, we want to make the fans happy and we will do here also,” said Biswajit, former Indian national star.
East Bengal are here without their key performers but the coach said, “Out of 32 players of the team 14 are playing in the ISL, but it is not excuse, for the success you have to beat every opponents. But we have every respect for all the opponents.”
Manager of Dhaka Abahani Limited Sattayajit Das Rupu also first of all wants to finish the first phase as group top then they will go forward step by step but their final target is to be champions.
“Our initial target is to be the group champions then to win the semifinal and the main focus on winning the trophy.”
Rupu said that four foreign booters, Sunday, Samson Illiasu, Samad Yusuf and Kester Akon are all set to fire and they will be the main weapons of the team, said Rupu.
Coach Amolesh Sen said that they are committed to cross the group hurdle as they have almost organised the team.
“Might be we are in tough group but we are very much committed to move into the semifinal. You have to beat all the opponents to be champions,” Amolesh replied to a query.
