In face of teachers’ protests, Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities yesterday dismissed Faysal Hossain Dipu, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) JU unit organising secretary, from his job. Using special power, JU Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam issued the order dismissing Dipu from the registrar office. On July 13, Prof Islam had appointed four BCL men, including Dipu, and two others on ad-hoc basis ignoring teachers’ requests.
JU Registrar Abu Bakkar Siddique said, “The authorities have already issued a letter sacking Dipu and it will come into effect from November 18, according to the university rules.”
The BCL, meanwhile, protested the dismissal order and hinted at announcing a movement against it. It claimed the notice did not follow a proper official procedure.
“Neither any formal allegation was submitted nor any body was formed to probe allegations raised by the teachers against Dipu,” said Mahmudur Rahman Jony, president of the BCL JU unit.
He also claimed that the decision was taken just to fulfil the demand of a portion of the teachers.
Jahangirnagar University Teacher’s Association (JUTA), on Saturday, had threatened of a strike if the appointment of Dipu is not cancelled within 24 hours.
The JUTA alleged that Dipu was among some BCL men, who on October 9, 2013, attacked teachers staging a sit-in in front of the administrative building demanding the removal of then VC Prof Anwar Hossain.
