19 suspected Jamaat men held in cities

RAJSHAHI: Detectives picked up suspected four leaders and activist of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, including the general secretary of its Rajshahi city unit, from different areas of the city early Monday, reports UNB. The detained were identified as Amaj Uddin Mondal, general secretary of Rajshahi unit of Jamaat, Mohammad Hafiz Uddin Esha, ammer of Shah Makhdum thana unit of Jamaat and another leader Zillur Rahman, and an activist Mamtaj Uddin Ahmed. Being tipped off, a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of police conducted a drive in Terokhadia area around 1:00am and held Amaj Uddin. Based on Amaj’s information during the primary investigation, police also held Zillur from the same area.
Later, based on Amaj’s information, the law enforcers conducted another drive in Shah Makhdum area and held Hafiz Uddin Esha and Mamtaj Uddin Ahmed at about 1:30 am. Sardar Tamij Uddin, additional commissioner of Rajshahi DB, confirmed the incident. Another report adds from Rangpur: Police arrested 68 persons, including 23 leaders and activists of BNP, Jamaat and Shibir, from the city and different places in the district last night, police sources said. The leaders and activists of BNP, Jamaat and Shibir have been arrested for their alleged involvement with recent subversive activities like hurdling petrol bombs on passenger buses, killing innocent people, other terrorist activities and crimes.
Of them, police have arrested four leaders and activists of BNP, 15 of Jamaat and four Shibir men from different areas under Kotwali Thana and Sadar, Pirgachha, Mithapukur, Kawnia and Badarganj upazilas. After primary interrogation, police produced the arrested persons before different Rangpur courts from where they were sent to jail hajat yesterday afternoon, police said.
