The Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has criticised newly selected 16 leaders to the BCL committee here for their controversial nature. It warned that the leaders will be suspended if they fail to prove themselves innocent of the allegations brought against them.
On Wednesday, BCL general secretary Golam Rabbani disclosed those names at a press briefing at the Awami League's (AL) president's political office in Dhanmondi, after receiving instructions by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also chief of the organisation, in this regard.
"In keeping with the instructions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, we have pointed out 16 newly selected leaders who are accused in cases and controversies. We are giving them 24 hours to prove themselves innocent. Otherwise, we'll suspend them from the BCL committee," he said.
Before the press briefing, BCL president Reaznul Chowdhury Shovon and Golam Rabbani discussed the issue with AL joint general secretaries Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman.
BCL president Shovon said: "We'll not only take action against anyone having a controversial nature, but also take steps against leaders who have tarnished the BCL's image."
Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina instructed BCL top leaders to resolve the issue. She gave the directives to Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and Jahangir Kabir Nanak at a meeting at the Ganobhaban on Wednesday.
Hasina asked Shovon to drop the “controversial” leaders from the committee if the allegations against them are found true, according to sources.
The 16 names announced for the BCL committee are given below along with the allegations brought against them. Among them, 13 are vice-presidents of the committee.

One name has been dropped from the list: joint-secretary Paradip Chowdhury. He was alleged to have affiliations with the Islami Chhatra Shibir. But this leader belongs to the Hindu community and thus cannot be an activist of the Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing, confirmed AL general secretary Golam Rabbani.
Earlier, on Monday, the BCL announced its 301-member full-fledged central committee, triggering demonstrations by some of those who could not make it to the new committee. The committee was formed a year after the BCL’s 29th national council on May 11–12 last year.
On July 31, the AL chief nominated Shovon as BCL president and Golam Rabbani as general secretary.
