The 39th homecoming day Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going to be observed today. On this day in 1981, Hasina returned home from India after nearly six years in exile following the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members by a group of Army officers on August 15, 1975.
However, the two daughters of Bangabandhu—Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana—survived as they had been in Germany at that time. Hasina was elected president of the Awami League (AL) at the party’s national council held on February 14–16, 1981. But she was not present in the country at that time. Meanwhile, the AL and its associate bodies have chalked out various programmes to mark the day. The party will hold a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in the afternoon. National leaders and eminent citizens will speak at the event. The Jubo League, Bangladesh Chhatra League and other associate bodies of the ruling party will also organise various programmes to observe the occasion.
AL general secretary Obaidul Quader, in a party press release, called upon the leaders and workers of the party and its associate organisations to observe the day in a befitting manner. He also prayed for long life of Sheikh Hasina.
