Jahanara Alam, fast bowler of the Bangladesh women’s national cricket team said they should rethink of their domestic cricket structure for the women’s cricket so that it could be improved with the same pace of the men’s cricket.
Alam also said that they are lagged behind a lot than the other cricketing nations for the lack of the stronger domestic cricket structure.
Citing India’s domestic cricket structure, she added that they have Under-19, Under-23 and senior team beside the national team, whose players became matured enough before stepping into the national team.
“We’re lagged more behind India, who have teams at the level of Under-19, Under-23 and senior team after the national team. These three teams can play round the year. Each team can play six tournaments in a calendar year. They’ve a well-structured domestic cricket for the women’s cricket. As a result, their mentality, temperament and capability grow up step by step before entering into the national team. They face no problem to play at senior level cricket,” said Jahanara Alam, who returned home from India playing for Velocity in Women’s T20 Challenge, dubbed Indian Premier League (IPL) for women’s cricketers orgainsed by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
“But our cricket structure is so weak, I think, we have to face a lot of problems even to find our pipeline players. Recently the board has taken some initiatives to develop the women’s cricket,” Alam told The Independent at the Sultana Kamal Women’s Complex in Dhanmondi yesterday.
“I think, those who have strong domestic structure will be stayed ahead at international cricket. So, I belief, the BCB will take more steps to make the structure stronger and then women’s cricket in Bangladesh will be developed and more cricketers will be produced who could get opportunity to play in foreign league in future,” she added.
The pacer said that they have four-five players in their team who are good enough to play in overseas league. She also said that they have to work hard for this and perform consistently at international level cricket.
“If I could do perform well, if I could share my view, it’s then possible to open the window for the other Bangladesh players. I could have performed what I did. You all see my performance in TV. It’s better that if you perform well they will then call you to play for them,” she said.
“2018 was my golden year. My overall performance was well in all the tournaments. For this, IPL calls me and I got such big call,” she continued.
“I believe, we’ve four-five players in our team who are good performers have ability to play in IPL. They have to transform themselves instantly to well perform at this type of tournament. I believe, the next year one or two teams will be increase in IPL and will be organised bigger way, where two –three players from Bangladesh will get calls,” she added. When asked about her experience in the big stage, the fast-bowler said that the experience and inspiration she gathered from the tournament will be helpful not only for me but also for the team.
“I was elated to play in IPL. I was very much excited. The experience I gathered that provided much impetus me to go the next stage,” she thought.
“What I brought from IPL I’ll say that I brought a big inspiration that will help me make newly and help me contribute for the team’s success,” she said, signing off.
