Igloo Ice Cream fined Tk 5 lakh

A mobile court of Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) yesterday fined Igloo Ice Cream, a subsidiary of Abdul Monem Group, Tk 5 lakh for various irregularities at its Kadamtali branch in the capital. Lead by Tusar Ahmed, executive magistrate of BFSA, the team conducted a drive at the Kadamtali branch of the company and slapped the fine as per Safe Food Act-2013. About the drive, the magistrate told reporters that he found a number of irregularities.

“There are two sides of an ice cream production machine. Sticks are inserted from one side and ice cream comes out from the other side. The point from which the ice cream is made was found dirty and unhealthy,” he said.

“For that reason, under section 33—a food security section—the company has been fined Tk 3 lakh. In addition, the company was fined Tk 2 lakh under section 32 (A) for not to fully adhering to the conditions of labeling and having irregularities in labeling,” he added.

“The BFSA team also seized some raw materials for examination. If irregularities are found after examination, action will be taken against Igloo,” added Tusar.

According to food safety law clause 32 (A), Products cannot be distributed or sold without government-defined wrapping, identification and label additions.

According to food safety law clause 33, food items cannot be produced and sold in a way that is considered harmful to human health.
