Mango harvesting begins in Rajshahi today

OUR CORRESPONDENT, Rajshahi

The harvesting of tasty and fleshy fruit mango in Rajshahi area begins today (May 15), amid concerns of growers that the fruit will only ripe by the end of this month. Abdul Kader, deputy commissioner (DC) of Rajshahi, informed through a meeting that they have decided to commence the first phase of harvesting of Guti mango from today (Wednesday).

However, the harvesting of Gopalbhog variety will begin on May 20, Ranipasand and Laxmanbhog on May 25, Khirsapat and Himsagar on May 28, Langra on June 6, Amrapali, Fazli and Surma Fazli on June 16, and Ashwina varieties on July 1 in phages, he informed. Due to an intense heat wave, the date for harvesting three varieties of Guti, Gopalbhog, and Laksmanbhog have been set at least five days ahead of schedule compared to the last year.

Dr Alim Uddin, principal scientific officer of Rajshahi Fruit Research Center, said if the present spell of heat wave continues the mangoes will ripen quickly. However, the ripening will be delayed in case of rainfall, he said. He urged the farmers to follow the weather condition, as well as the district administration’s schedule.

Meanwhile, if mangoes of any orchid become mature before the scheduled time, the farmer can commence harvest after getting permission from the local Upazilla Nirbahi Officer. However, before permitting the harvesting, the UNO must visit the garden. If he finds proper reason, he will give permission to harvest, as per the decision of the district administration.

“We were able to establish confidence among the country people that mangoes of Rajshahi are chemical free, by scheduling the harvest time for the last few years. That is why, the reputation of mangoes was good last year” said Rajshahi DC Abdul Kader, hoping that the reputation will become stronger this year.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said if the weather condition remains suitable, the region will witness a good yield of the tasty and fleshy fruit this season. In this season, around 18 thousand hectares of land have been brought under mango cultivation and 2,13,426 metric tonnes of mango production targets has been set in the district.
