The death toll of Bangladeshi hajj pilgrims from the tragic stampede in Saudi Arabia’s Mina has now reached 137, said State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam yetsreday, reports UNB. “Fifty-three other Bangladeshi pilgrims are still missing,” he told reporters at a press briefing at the ministry. Shahriar said Bangladesh Ambassador to Saudi Arabia talked to media directly and updated information from time to time. He also said of the 137 victims, the identities of 41 Bangladesh nationals are yet to be verified but the officials confirmed that they are Bangladeshis. Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque and DGs of the ministry were present at the briefing arranged to brief the media about the Nansen Initiative Inter-governmental Global Consultation on the Protection Agenda. Over one lakh people from Bangladesh went to Saudi Arabia to perform hajj this year. On September 24 last, a crowd collapse caused the deaths of many people who were suffocated or crushed during the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mina, Makkah. On October 9, the Associated Press count showed at least 1,453 people died following the incident. A new tally shows last month's crush and stampede at the Saudi hajj was the deadliest event to ever strike the annual pilgrimage.
