No covered van, truck on highways for three days before Eid

CNG refilling stations ‘to remain open 24/7’
Special Correspondent, Dhaka

The government will forbid the plying of covered vans and trucks on highways for three days before and after Eid-ul-Fitr. Besides, CNG refueling stations will remain open round the clock for seven days before and five days after Eid. Road Transport and Highways Fivision secretary Nazrul Islam told this to the media after a meeting at the Secretariat yesterday.

“We have taken these decisions to make the journeys of homebound passengers during the holidays and those returning home after Eid smooth, hassle-free and comfortable. We will also request the energy, power and mineral resources ministry to keep CNG-refuelling stations open round the clock ahead and after Eid so that people can refuel their vehicles,” the secretary said.

When asked about the dilapidated condition of roads, Nazrul Islam replied: “Their condition is better than before and the authorities concerned will take immediate steps if there are any such issues. Many highways have already been upgraded to four lanes and the condition of these highways is very smooth.”

He assured that there would not be any public suffering on the roads during the upcoming Eid holidays. “We will monitor everything very strictly. Drives will be conducted for checking ticket prices and monitor the ticket counters. If any irregularities are found, action will be taken instantly,” he added.

Three vigilance teams will be posted at the three big bus stations in the city and a control room will be opened at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority for checking unfit vehicles, the secretary said.
