Food minster’s son-in-law died of cardiac arrest: Viscera report

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT, Dhaka

Dr Rajan Karmakar, son-in-law of food minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder, died of cardiac arrest linked to the slowing of his heart rate, according to the viscera report. On March 16, Dr Rajan Karmakar, 39, an assistant professor in the oral and maxillofacial surgery department under the dentistry faculty of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and husband of the food minister’s daughter Krishna Rani Majumder, was taken to Square Hospitals in an unconscious state around 3:45am and doctors declared him dead.

Asaduzzaman, a doctor at Square Hospitals, told journalists that they had found no marks of injury on Rajan’s body. “Initially, we were convinced that he had died of heart failure,” said the doctor. His family members, colleagues and friends later claimed that Rajan’s death was not natural and that he was murdered.

Family members and relatives of Rajan demanded a proper autopsy without any influence.

Sujon Karmakar, maternal uncle of the deceased, filed a written complaint with the police, suspecting that it was not a natural death.

On receipt of the complaint, the police sent the body to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital (ShSMCH) for autopsy.

After autopsy, Dr Uttam Kumar Barua, director of the ShSMCH, said: “The forensic medicine department has conducted an autopsy. The only thing that can be said now is that the body has no injury marks.”

At that time, Dr Selim Reza, chief of the ShSMCH forensic department, said: “We are not sure yet how Dr Rajan actually died, although we are done with the autopsy.”

The heart and tissues from the deceased’s stomach for the viscera tests were collected and would be sent to the lab to determine the cause of death, he added. “The lab will also conduct histopathological tests to avoid further confusion,” Selim said.

The final result of the chemical analysis and histopathological reports showed that Dr Rajan Karmakar died as his cardiovascular system stopped. Dr Selim Reza confirmed the matter.
