Youth lynched after he kills elderly man in Cumilla

UNB, Cumilla

A young man was killed in a lynch-mob attack after he stabbed a septuagenarian man to death at Balutupa in Sadar upazila on Wednesday night. The deceased were identified as Ali Akbar, 70, son of Charu Mia, and Kasai Alam Miah, 35, son of Halim Miah of the area. Officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station Abu Salam Miah said Alam swooped on Akbar at Balutua Madhya Bazar around 9pm and stabbed him with a knife indiscriminately following previous enmity, leaving him dead on the spot. Agitated, locals caught Alam and gave him a good beating, injuring him badly. He was taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, the OC said, adding that they sent to bodies to morgue for autopsy.

Hizb-ut-Tahrir ‘member’ arrested in Rajshahi

UNB, Rajshahi

A suspected member of banned militant group Hizb-ut-Tahrir was arrested while sticking posters in front of the Government Women’s College in the city on Wednesday. The arrestee was identified as Tanvir Hossain, 24, a student of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology. He is the son of Majibor Rahman of Mahadebpur upazila in Naogaon district.

Tipped off, police arrested Tanvir red-handed while sticking posters around 4 pm, said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Golam Ruhul Kuddus. A case was filed under Anti-Terrorism Act at Boalia Police Station.

Two arrested with phensidyl

Detective Branch of Police (DB) on Wednesday in a drive arrested two alleged drug peddlers along with 100 bottles of contraband phynsidyl at Motiyarpul area under Doublemouring Police Station in the city. The arrestees were identified as Abdul Barek (34) son of Khalilur Rahman of Chadpur district and Mohammad Sujan son of Abdul Mutaleb of Chattogram district.

AMM Humayon Khabir, Additional Deputy Commissioner of  Chattogram Metropolitan Police (west) said that acting on a tip off they conduct a drive and arrest two alleged drug peddlers  along with 100 bottles phensidyl . He also said that the operation will be continued to arrest the cohorts of Sujan and Barek.  

New voluntary organisation launched in Rangpur

BSS, Rangpur

A voluntary organisation ‘Manobotar Bondhone Rangpur’ was launched here on Wednesday evening aiming at standing beside the poor and distressed people in the society. Commence Minister Tipu Munshi formally launched journey of the organisation at a colourful function held at Zila Parishad Community Centre as the chief guest.

Later, an Iftar mahfil participated by 100 orphans of the city was arranged on the launching day of the organisation. Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP), Rangpur City Community Policing Committee and District Hotel and Restaurant Owners’ Association (DHROA) jointly took the initiative of launching the organisation.

Qulkhwani of Mojibul Haq today

The qulkhwani of Mojibul Haque Bhuiyan, a former special correspondent of the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), will be held at his village home at Guthia Sonapur under Chhagalnaiya upazila of Feni district today after Magrib prayers. Colleagues, relatives and well-wishers have been requested to attend the qulkhwani and doa mahfil and pray for peace of the departed soul. Mojibul Haque Bhuiyan (63) died at his city residence at 6:30am on Wednesday. He was buried at his family graveyard after namaj-e-janaza on the ground of Guthia Sonapur School following Asr prayers the same day.
