Two elephants found dead

Two wild elephants were found dead at a frontier village in Dewanganj upazila of Jamalpur district on Saturday night.  According to police, the wild elephants were electrocuted at village Makhanerchar in Dan-gdhora union in Dewan-ganj upazila in the district about 500 to 700 yards inside Bangaladesh territory from Indian boarder at around 9:30 pm. Police said the wild elephants come down from Balughat hill tracts in Meghalaya state of India and entered Bangladeshi territory in search of food and got electrocuted as they came in contact with the barbed wire fence. Lutfar Rahman, a ward member of Dangdhara Union Parishad and inhabitant of Makhanerchar village, however, said the wild elephants were beaten to death by local people to save properties and lives. Officer-in-charge of Dewan-ganj police station, Aslam Hossain said livestock department will carry out postmortem of the dead elephants and a case will be filed at Dewanganj police station under Wild Animals Protection Act.
