Stating that they do not see anything new in the US security message in terms of security threat, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali yesterday affirmed that the overall situation in Bangladesh is 'fully under government control', reports UNB.
"We don't think there’s anything additional there [in the US security message]. We didn’t see anything new," he told reporters at a press conference at the foreign ministry.
Mahmood Ali came up with the remark when asked whether the government sees any stronger words on security threat in the US security message.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam, Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque and DGs of the Ministry were present.
Later, a reporter read out part of the security message updated by the US Embassy on Saturday night and wanted to know whether they see the use of stronger words than in the past.
In reply, the Foreign Minister said, “We don’t feel like that. We don’t think there’s something additional there compared to past. You read well.”
The US in its latest security message mentioned that security agencies in Bangladesh have taken extraordinary measures to increase security for foreigners in Bangladesh, but the terrorist threat remains ‘real and credible’.
As another journalist wanted to know about the verification of ISIL claim regarding the killing of two foreign nationals as the US was supposed to verify the claim, Mahmood Ali said only they (US side) can reply it as the government cannot reply on behalf of the US. “You (journalists) can find it out what they have investigated and found.”
He said the government is fully ready to face any situation and everything remains as usual.
Responding to a question whether the updated security message indicates the deterioration of Bangladesh’s relations with the Western world, State Minister Shahriar Alam said, “Not at all. This is absolutely out of question.”
While briefing diplomats, he said, the government conveyed the diplomats that there is nothing to ‘overreact’ and the government re-assessed the security situation and provided required security for foreign nationals.
Shahriar also said the security advisories are not ‘red alert’, and some 58 countries are also there at the level 2 security message.
About relations with the Western world, he further said they are many examples of bilateral and multilateral relations between Bangladesh and the western countries.
On the other hand, the US has appreciated government’s efforts to ensure the safety and security of foreigners working and visiting Bangladesh, and mentioned that the intention of security message was to encourage US citizens to continue to ‘exercise caution’.
