Salaries of president, PM, speaker to be doubled

A month after the salaries of government employees were hiked, the government will soon increase the salaries of the President, Prime Minster, ministers, lawmakers, Speaker, deputy Speaker, Chief Justice, judges of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court and High Court judges.
In order to increase these salaries, the Cabinet Division has prepared a proposal to amend six different laws in this connection. It would be placed at today’s Cabinet meeting, sources in the Cabinet Division said.
According to the proposal, the salary of the President is likely to be raised to Tk. 119,900 from the current Tk. 61,200, while the Prime Minister’s salary would be increased to Tk. 1,14,800 from the current Tk. 58,600.
The salary of each minister will rise to Tk. 97,200 from the present Tk. 53,100, while each state minister’s salary will increase to Tk. 87,500 from Tk. 47,800. The salary of each deputy ministers will go up to Tk. 86,500 from Tk. 45,150.  The salary of every lawmaker will jump to Tk. 55,000 from the current Tk. 27,000, according to the proposal.
Salaries of the Speaker, deputy Speaker, Chief Justice, judges of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court and the High Court judges will also be nearly doubled, the sources said.

Besides, their other allowances—including house maintenance, daily allowance and conveyance allowance—will also be increased.
Cabinet secretary Muhammad Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told The Independent that a proposal for increasing the salaries of the President, Prime Minster, ministers, lawmakers, Speaker, deputy Speaker, Chief Justice, judges of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court and the High Court judges would be placed at today’s Cabinet meeting.
“For increasing their salaries, six separate laws would be amended soon. After getting approval from the Cabinet, six separate drafts of the amendment laws would be placed before the upcoming sessions of Parliament as bills,” he said.
“The proposed increased salaries are likely to come into effect from July 2015,” he added.
Sources in the Cabinet Division said the six laws that would be amended are: The President’s Remuneration and Privileges Act, 1975, The Prime Minister’s Remuneration and Privileges Act, 1975, The Ministers, Ministers of the State and Deputy Ministers’ Remuneration and Privileges Act, 1973, The Speaker and Deputy Speaker’s Remuneration and Privileges (Amendment) Act, The Members’ of Parliament Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Act, and The Supreme Court Judges’ Remuneration and Privileges Amendment Act, 2010.
On March 8, 2010, the government approved a proposal to increase the salaries and allowances of the President, the Prime Minister, ministers, state ministers, deputy ministers, Speaker, deputy Speaker, judges of the Supreme Court and Members of Parliament.
On September 7, the Cabinet approved the eight pay scales for government employees.
