Two minors drown
Two minor  boys drowned in ponds in separate incidents in Jobsen area and Bakal village in Agailjhara upazila of Barisal district on Saturday afternoon. The deceased were Mahin Sarder, 2, son of Abdul Alim, and Angkan Das, 2, son of Manik Das. Locals said Mahin fell into a pond adjacent to his house while playing in the area at about 3pm. In another incident, Angkan also drowned in the village pond in the afternoon. Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Agailjhara Police Station, confirmed the incident.

104 arrested in Ctg

Police in special drives arrested 104 people from different upazilas of Chittagong district Friday night. The law enforcers also seized two cut rifles, six rounds of bullets, nine knives, 359 liters of locally-made liquor, 650 yaba tablets and three (kg) kilograms of hemp during the night-long drives. Mohammad Naimul Hasan, additional superintendent of police (Special Branch) of Chittagong district police, said several teams of police conducted the drives from Friday night to Saturday morning and held 104 accused in different cases. Of them, 26 people are accused in regular cases while 78 are warranted accused, the additional SP added.

Eight ‘robbers’ held

Bangladesh Coast Guard (East Zone) arrested eight robbers from a fishing boat in Sandwip of Chittagong early yesterday. The arrestees were Abul Kashem, 22, Ekram Hossain, 26, Abul Kashem, 26, Nazim, 21, Khaled, 25, Zakir Hossain, 28, Rubel Hossain, 26 and Babul Hossain, 26. They were arrested from Noakhali ghat of Sandwip upazila of Chittagong. Coast Guard sources said acting on a tip-off, they conducted a drive at Noakhali ghat and sensing their presence, the robbers dumped their firearms in water. Later, Coast Guard arrested the eight robbers.

Workshop on disabled welfare

About 40 journalists from different print and electronics media attended a workshop yesterday in the city on disabled persons emphasising they can be developed into a trained and skilled manpower with little sympathy from the
society. The workshop was organised by Bangladesh Pratibandhi Kalyan Samity (BPKS) at its office in the capital. It was presided by Abdus Sattar Dulal, executive director of BPKS and addressed among others by Dr Najmul Ahsan Kalimullah, chairman of  JANIPOP and a teacher of the Dhaka University, Saiful Huda, executive news editor of the  SATV, Animesh Toju, Asma Begum and Abdul Aziz Khan of the BPKS, said a release.
