Ctg city Juba League

No full-fledged body in two years

Staff reporter, ctg

Although more than two years have already gone by, Chittagong city chapter of Juba League could neither upgrade its convening committee into a full-fledged one nor hold the councils within the stipulated time. Moreover, the top brass of the organisation could not come up with any tentative timeframe when the city council is likely to be held.   It may be mentioned that a 101-member convening committee of the Chittagong city chapter of the youth front of the ruling Awami League was announced on July 9, 2013 where Mohiuddin Bachchu was made convener and Delwar Hossain Khoka, Farid Mahmud, Didarul Alam and Mahbubul Haque Sumon joint conveners. The convening committee was supposed to upgrade the present 101-member body into a full-fledged 131-member one within three months. However, the incumbent convening committee failed to hold councils in all 44 ward units leading to an apparent organisational inertia.
The organisational activities in most of the wards have been running with committees which have already expired their tenures. The 101-member partial city chapter committee has also triggered pent-up frustration and discontent among the post aspiring leaders and activists within the party.
The leaders and activists at grass-root level alleged that the top brass remained preoccupied with their respective professions which eventually slowed down the pace of the organisation.  The party insiders said that the top five leaders of the organisation have been lobbying hard for grabbing two vital posts- president and general secretary.
There is a widespread speculation within the party that the tug of war among the top five leaders over ‘grabbing the vital posts’ is also standing in the way of holding councils and forming a full-fledged committee.
Speaking to The Independent, Mohiuddin Bachchu, convener of the convening committee of the Chittagong city chapter of Juba League, said that they have already held councils in six wards of the city.
“We have recently launched a programme for recruiting members of the party with an aim to galvanise the activists and leaders into action. We have also undertaken a programme to purge the party of the opportunist elements. Activists and leaders with a proven track record of integrity and dedication for the party will be welcomed and preferred in all units of the organisation,” said Bachchu.
Asked if the his party fellows are in a state of organisational lethargy in absence of the full-fledged city committee, Bachchu claimed that Juba League is now the most active organisation of all the associate bodies of Awami League.
Bachchu, however, could not come up with any tentative time about holding the city council and upgrading the convening committee. Asked why they failed to upgrade the convening committee into a full-fledged one despite belonging to a ruling party, Farid Mahmud, joint convener of Chittagong city Juba League, said that they could hold the council if everything went smoothly. “Regrettably, the preceding two years was not smooth sailing for us. We could have held the councils and upgraded the committee if our organisational activities had not been hampered much by the national elections, countrywide violence and blockade by the BNP-Jamaat alliance and mayoral polls,” said Farid. “We are trying our level best and running our activities for forming a full-fledged committee. Even so, the issue largely depends on the central leadership,” added Farid.
