Call to ensure rights of workers, safety in workplaces

May Day observed in cities

The historic May Day was observed in the cities of Chattogram, Rajshahi, Barishal, Khulan and Rangpur amid fresh demand to ensure justified rights of workers and their safety in workplaces. The day was a public holiday.

BSS adds from CHATTOGRAM: Different political parties, trade unions, Hotel Sramik Union and Readymade Garment (RMG) workers’ organisations observed the day through various programmes, which included discussions and rally.

Besides the city, workers of industrial belts and its outskirts including Sitakunda, Fouzderhat, Patenga, Nasirabad, Biyazeed, Karnaphuli and Kalurghat also held rallies, processions and organised cultural programmes marking the day.

To mark the day, Chattogram Divisional Labour Department and Directorate of Factory and Establishment Inspection arranged daylong programmes.

City Mayor A J M Nasir Uddin addressed the function as the chief guest while Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Mohammad Ilias Hossain spoke as special guest.

 In Rajshahi: Marking the day, political parties, trade unions, labour and socio-cultural organisations including Jatiya Shramik League organised various programs including hoisting of national flag atop the offices of trade unions and labour organisations, discussion, rallies and cultural functions.

District administration and Divisional office of the Labour Directorate jointly organised a post-rally discussion at Zila Parishad Auditorium.

Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi division Jakir Hossain addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi SM Abdul Kadir in the chair.

Mayor Khairuzzaman Liton stressed the need for the safety of the labours at their working places and reduction of child labors so that they can grow up as healthy citizens of the country.

OUR Staff Reporter reports from Barishal: Different labour organisations observed the day holding colorful programmes including rallies, discussions, meetings and cultural programmes.

District administration with Labour Welfare Centre brought out rally from Amanatgang area and paraded main road of the city.

Barishal district and city unit Sramik League organised  a rally and meeting at Sohel Squire with Shajahan Hawladar in the chair. BCC mayor Serniabat Sadik Abdullah attended the rally as the chief guest.  Barishal unit Jatiyatabadi Shramik Dal organised a rally on Ashwini Kumar Hall premises with Bashir Ahmed in the chair. The rally paraded main roads of the city.

The day was observed in Rangpur with a pledge for building excellent relation between owners and workers, ensuring just rights, welfare and workplace safety of working people to increase productivity and achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

The district and upazila administrations, Directorate of Labour, organisations of workers, labourers, professionals, socio-cultural, political and volunteer and human rights activists chalked out daylong programmes in observance of the day. On the other hand, dozens of organisations of working people brought out series of colourful processions on the city streets chanting slogans in favour of working people.

In KHULNA: To mark the day, Khulna Divisional Labour Office, Mill-Factory and Organization Inspection Office, Labour Welfare Center and Industry Relation Institution of Khulna (IRI) organised a discussion meeting at the Divisional Labour Office in the city.

Mayor of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Talukder Abdul Khaleque addressed the meeting as the chief guest with Khulna Divisional Commissioner Lokman Hossain Mia in the chair.

Khulna Metropolitan Commissioner (KMP) Khondokar Lutful Kabir, Deputy Commissioner of Khulna Md Helal Hossain, Police Super S M Shafiullah, Chairman of Bangladesh Jute Association (BJA) Sheikh Sayed Ali, President of Khulna District Unit Jatiya Sramik League B M Jafar and General Secretary of city unit Sramik League Ranjit Kumar Ghosh spoke as special guests.

Afterwards, Trikal Sangskritik Goshty arranged a cultural function.

Earlier, a colourful procession was brought out led by the Divisional commissioner Lokman Hossain Mia from city’s New Market area that paraded in Khulna-Dhaka highway and ended at the Labour Office.
