7,908 complaints in a year against telcos

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
7,908 complaints in a year against telcos

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) received a total of 7,908 complaints filed by the consumers of telecom operators in the last one year. The BTRC managed to get the operators resolve 94 per cent or 7,390 complaints. The rest of the issues will also be resolved soon, says the report revealed by the regulator. The subscribers lodged their complaints by dialing short code ‘100.’

Of the total, staggering 3,427 complaints were filed against Robi, the second largest mobile phone operator in the country following a merger with Airtel. The report revealed that a total of 2,413 complaints were filed against Grameenphone (GP), the largest telecom operator, while the number is 1,157 against Banglalink and 911 against Teletalk.

Consumers filed the complaints between May 1, 2018 and April 30, 2019. Major problems reported by the consumers include issues relating to social networking platforms, SIM card blocking, internet issues, queries about tariff and value added services (VAS), network issues, queries about online games, quiz contests, queries about data volumes and financial services on mobile phones such as banking, call drops, package migration and reports of fraud.

According to the report, the commission takes cognisance of the consumers’ complaints and issues show-cause notices on mobile phone operators. The BTRC also mediates between the customers and the operators to help resolve the above mentioned issues. It also ensures that the consumers get proper compensation, if allegations of negligence are proven against the companies.

Robi has resolved 100 percent of the complaints filed against its network, GP and Banglalink resolved all but three, and Teletalk 81. However, the state-run operator left 22 complaints regarding its network unresolved.

Of the complaints regarding the quality of service, GP has resolved 90 out of 98, Robi 183 out of 209, and Banglalink 30 out of 31. Teletalk only resolved two out of 80 complaints filed against it over the quality of service. Of the complaints regarding the speed of internet, GP has resolved 29 out of 31, Robi 63 out of 64, Banglalink 13 out of 14, and Teletalk has resolved 16 out of 18 complaints.

The mobile phone subscribers have suffered most with SIM barring problem and in this case, GP tops the list. A total of 750 GP subscribers faced SIM barring problem and the operators resolved complaints of 741. Robi resolved 599 complaints out of 611 and Banglalink 224 out of 239. Teletalk managed to resolve issues of 34 out of 60 customers.

Contacted, BTRC Chairman Jahirul Haque said the commission was trying to make the operators resolve the complaints of their subscribers. “We want mobile subscribers to get quality service from the operators. The BTRC is working to this end,” he added.
