The government has reopened a flour mill recently under the food department in the capital with a target of producing 200 tonnes of flour/atta in a day after production had been suspended from 2004, reports BSS.
The BNP-led four-party government had closed down the operation of the mill and sold its machinery and parts during that time, said Food Department sources.
The Food Department has taken up a four-year project on construction of the “Postogola Govt Modern Flour Mill” on July 2012 and resumed production this month following implementing the project within the stipulated time in June 2015 set by the Executive Committee for National Economic Council (ECNEC).
On October 8, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the flour mill at Postogola in the city through a video conference. “The project has been implemented to ensure quality supply of flour and atta and also to keep the price of flour and atta stable in the market,” said Director General of Food Fayez Ahmed.
Even the implementation of the project would help to cope with the situation of shortage of food at the time of a natural disaster, Ahmed added, saying the project has a capacity of producing 200 tonnes a day but alongside construction of a silo with 10,000 tonnes wheat storage capacity would help to pile up flour and atta of the mill.
The project will help meet the demand of the marginal and poor people of the country, said the official. The selling price of per kilo flour would be Tk 22 and atta Tk 20.
After approval of the project by the ECNEC on May 8, 2012, Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory (BMTF) completed the construction of the project with an estimated cost of Tk 131.82 crore.
