BNP’s entry to parliament positive

BNP’s entry to parliament positive

For any democracy to thrive, a government in parliament must have an active and vocal opposition and BNP’s decision to allow its elected members to take oath at the 11th National Elections promises a proper democratic operation. Following the parliamentary election, the BNP and allies had boycotted it on grounds of mass irregularities and despite some of its candidates winning, decided to stay away from parliament. However, for any party to be heard by the people, presence in an official capacity is essential.

At the same time, the government also needs a robust opposition to point out where improvement is needed. Also, going beyond the traditional definition and equation of party in power and in opposition, the country needs a united voice from major political entities in issues like terrorism, sectarianism, social division, social safety and militancy. A marvellous example of parliamentary unity on national issues can be seen in the UK, where both Labour and Conservatives forget all differences and put aside biting criticism and take a united front on issues involving national security and public benefit. In the same manner, both the ruling AL and the opposition BNP need to take a firm stand against militancy and radicalism.

Bangladesh and many other states across the world are grappling with the insidious rise of extremis ideologies which can only be tackled when political parties decide to be united on certain issues. For too long, BNP had been missing from parliament which only pushed it towards political obscurity. By being present in parliament, they will not only inject impetus to local politics but will also set an example of how sense prevails over blind emotion. We definitely welcome this move since oath taking by elected BNP candidates ends a feeling of impasse, creating an atmosphere of hope. The ruling party has used affirmative rhetoric in addressing BNP’s decision which is also encouraging. Forty eight years into independence,

Bangladesh has defied all prophecies of doom, emerging as a developing state with a booming economy. For this country, the only way now is forward because all the signs of development are seen in every aspect of society. At such an inspiring moment, a constructive parliament with AL-BNP will only re-assert a full blooded democratic system in action.
