The moderate heat wave that is currently blowing across the country has already disrupted life at many places. In the capital where heat is usually felt more than the actual temperature recorded, about five degrees higher in almost each case, life here has become harder to pass in daytime. On Thursday, temperature was recorded at 37 degrees Celsius, but the heat felt was more than that and, according to the forecast of met office, the heat may come down a little with rain at times but the temperature will be there. This means during this Ramzan, temperature will be felt considerably.
As a consequence of heat, heat related diseases including diarrhoea have already appeared, and an increasing number of diarrhoea patients are getting admitted into the city’s hospitals including ICCDR,B. As heat will continue for quite a long time, public hospitals everywhere should be prepared to tackle the heat related diseases.
Cases of heat stroke have not been reported yet, but long heat spell can cause heat stroke and be fatal. Though the government cannot directly do anything to save people from heat stroke, it certainly can take up programmes to make people aware of the danger of a heat stroke. In this time a 5-taka packet of oral saline can save life of those who cannot keep indoors for livelihood needs and this message has to be reached to them. Rickshaw-pullers, CNG-drivers and construction workers should be made aware of the fact that street food is especially dangerous during this time.
To protect people from heat stroke or heat related diseases, developing awareness is vital. During this time, in village areas, drowning incident may rise as children can go to wherever they can find water. That is why guardians of children who do not know swimming should be especially careful about this.
In urban places, dangers for children come from street foods of all kinds, and guardians must remain aware. Though comparing to the heat of many cities in South Asia, Delhi and Karachi for example, heat is felt much less in Dhaka or even Rajshahi and Khulna, the truth is in these cities, heat related dangers are largely avoided because of awareness and preparations. But in Dhaka or other Bangladesh cities, heat can spell great harm in absence of preparations.
