‘Criminal’ killed in Ctg, 7 cops injured

Two Rohingya men, allegedly drug traders, were killed in a gunfight with the members of Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) at Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar yesterday. The deceased were identified as Saiful Islam (25), son of Shamsul Alam, and Nabi Hossain (23), son of Faruq Hossain, of Number 19 Rohingya camp located in Teknaf.

The incident of gunfight took place in Kerontoli area of Teknaf upazila at about 6 am this morning when a number of miscreants attacked the BGB personnel with local weapons after they were challenged by the BGB men, said captain of BGB 34 Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Ali Haider Azad Ahmed. Police seized 20,000 pieces of yaba pills and sharp weapons from the spot. In Chattogram, an alleged criminal was killed and seven members of law enforcers were injured yesterday in a gunfight between police and miscreants in Kolabagicha area of Asadganj in the district town. The deceased was identified as Wasim Parvez, an accused and top criminal, said Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station Md Mohsin.

Six cops among the injured were ASIs Sukumar, 35, Mahbub Alam, 32, Abul Hayat Arefin, 35, and police members Jakir, 40, Shahzahan, 35, Salauddin, 40, and Ranajit.

Mohsin said police conducted a drive to arrest accused Wasim Parvez, against whom a warrant was out, and Ashik in the area while the miscreants attacked police and tried to snatch away the accused. For self-defense police had to fire gunshots, during which Wasim sustained bullet wounds and seven police members were injured, he said. Wasim later succumbed to his injuries after being taken to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital in the evening.
