Consumer rights awareness
Sir,
Protection of consumer rights is important as it protects the rights of the consumers when they buy goods or services. Law on protection of consumer rights can help the consumers if they are treated unfairly or when things go wrong. Consumer right is a largely non-existent terminology in Bangladesh as consumers are often being deprived of quality products and services they pay for. The consumers rights are being violated randomly taking advantage of the ignorance of the consumers. The government, press and civil society can help raise awareness of the common people about their rights and privileges as customers. Rights of consumers are being violated every day in our country and we see the consumers being cheated in terms of quality, weight and standard. Happily, the government has recently doubled the penalty for cheating in terms of weight but we hardly see it being implemented. Often in our country, the disgruntled consumers do not lodge a complaint and their reticence encourages the sellers continue their immoral business.
The media should be vocal on this issue and help raise awareness of the people on this vital issue.
